So, some of you may remember I was in a bit of a pickle, where a pre-built Gateway I had once donated came back to me because it was shutting down before it could finish booting up to the OS that was installed on it, only for me to find that the board in question had far too many leaking/busted caps upon a tear-down. Much, much more recently, with some help from rwong48 and much more importantly DonoftheDead I've a system that seems to be up and running again.
Specs as follows:. AMD Opteron 185 (s939). Asus A8V Deluxe board (now, BIOS 1017). 4x1GB DDR400 RAM.
ATI HD 2600 Pro. generic as anything USB 2.0 card. Samsung 120GB SATA hard drive. (not yet installed) Adaptec r1200 IDE card While one of the must-use cases for this hardware is to basically use it to boot up tools for stuff like fixing up consoles, I did want to have something to do with it when I'm not using it for that, and given the specs, it occurred to me it could be a good period-accurate system for older games. Using UBCD 5.3.7, CPU stress testing checks out, VRAM checks out, memtest passes no problem.
So, then the next issue became, what OS to install? Based on what I have legit keys for, I had the option(s) of: (a) Windows 7 x86 (b) Windows Vista Business x86, or (c) Windows XP. Tried the first path and ran into a paradox. Setup would seemingly run through no problem, but when it came time to select the hard drive, when it was on the standard SATA ports, the drive was found but 7's setup refused to install, insisting the drive was not bootable to the board, despite it being listed as a bootable option in the BIOS. Meanwhile, if I enabled the optional RAID controller (even in IDE mode), plugged the drive on one of those ports, and restarted, setup refused to detect it was there.
So, I guess Windows 7 is a no-go. Decide to see if I could get things setup for Vista instead, but finding I can't get drivers, because VIA basically checked out of making drivers for anything by around Vista, and pretty much abandoned making drivers even before Vista, let alone for Windows 7. So, it wasn't even worth trying to install that. I guess that just leaves windows xp. Well, try to pare down the system to be as simple as possible, disabling as much as possible, and it just won't install. Even when I have the floppy drivers for f6'ing, even as I take out RAM to get it down to just one stick of RAM, it still fails to install.
When it actually gets to where to pick what disk to install, it actually BSOD's at Windows XP setup. This is with 4 sticks, 2 sticks or even just a single stick. Mind you, this is still with the fact that with 4 sticks of RAM, everything cleared with a pass in memtest on top of it. So I'm just stumped to what to do. Because as it is, I can't install any OS I have at all on it.
That board has 2 SATA controller. One is VIA and the other is Promise. The Via has 2 connectors towards the top/middle of the mobo and the Promise has 2 (and an red IDE connector) near the bottom.
To use the Promise controller you have to enable it in the BIOS. Then when installing an OS you put in a floppy with the Promise drivers when the OS installer asks for any RAID drivers. The same for VIA controller. You can use the ASUS disk to create the floppies.

XP won't look anywhere but the floppy drive, and via checked out of making drivers for anything before even Vista, claiming their drivers are already in 7's source material. The problem is, 7's setup refuses to install when the hard drive is connected to the via sata ports, convinced the board won't boot from it.
If i use the ports on the promise controller, there are no drivers for it for windows 7, and promise's website itself doesn't even host the drivers anymore. Tried also to use the drivers on the CD for the board, but its automated utility to copy said drivers to disk yields disks that XP setup can't read, and subsequently i can't format again.
It's killed three floppy disks already. But again i have the problem where setup goes straight to bsod the second i try to pick the disk to install to. So, presently, i literally can't install any os to this thing. It's just all the more perplexing that UBCD's build of Prime95 runs no problem, and that memtest checks out on the system, but I'm having this kind of problem.

Heck, the last time I even tried a build of Linux on any kind of Radeon card, it had zero support at all. I had no display at all, and it somehow paradoxically expected me to go online to get a driver when it would refuse to get online because it couldn't get a display. Before this, the last VIA chipset board I had was a KT266, which was an unmitigated nightmare.
So, is there even a distro that would work on such a cluster of hardware? If I could have installed without using F6 for drivers, I would have done so. And the only other hard drive I had to spare, a Seagate 160GB drive, it refuses to detect.

Are you in a jam where you can't afford a newer system or is there another reason you are battling this?

Take a day off and relax before you continue. The reason I say that the floppy can still be suspect is that floppy drives had personalities where one cartridge would work in one drive but not the other. Don't forget that there is a read protect on the disks themselves, it's a little button. I wouldn't use an old knoppix for testing, go to distro watch and look for a light live version that will suit you for testing, use their search tool to zero in, you can tell it your specs and it will return candidates. Also, swap cables and don't forget with EIDE cables there is a master and a slave, and there might be jumpers to change on your board, so read up on the board. If I had money and hardware I'd help you more, I'm struggling myself. Just remember, a computer is too dumb to get angry at.
In the short term, when the Gateway prebuilt that the Opteron came out of came back with bad caps all over, I've been wanting to re-use that CPU in hopefully a board that could better facilitate the overclocking it should have always been able to do. Second, but most importantly, that pre-built proved to be an excellent environment to use for the process of a hot-swap (soft)mod for Original Xbox consoles, as well as basically letting me refurbish them myself and be able to do more with them, possibly getting them to be in salable condition. By the same notion, part of the reason that I had hoped to get this VIA chipset board to behave, was because VIA's chipsets were also especially effective for flashing firmware on 360 DVD drives, and being able to interface with them directly. The connectivity kit that I've used to mod mine (and fix others) would have the option to interface with USB or a Serial port. With that in mind, part of me was leaning towards 7 x86, since (a) can't get more than 4GB of RAM in it anyway, (b) could still use current-gen software.
But XP would be fine because mod tools for repair work like that still works well in that environment (in part for the need of special drivers). Anecdotally, I was hoping that getting it up and running, it could be a solid period-era gaming PC for the games that simply don't play nice on 7 or later.
Steam's repacking of the likes of Splinter Cell allow it to technically run on my current main PC, but it has so many hard caps and the EAX patching available only apply to the multiplayer, which does no good for me, at all. Already had UBCD to test with, which is why I just cannot figure out why nothing is working. Or why nothing on it would tell me that the Samsung hard drive went bad like that. Especially when it seemed to be working fine before I put it in for this build in particular.

I know sata doesn't normally need a jumper but maybe the IDE system it came from has it set as slave via a jumper? Still I can't help feel for your frustration, it seems to be going against everything you have tried and it should be working.
But as others here mentioned, take a day off and come back to it, there is sometimes something very simple we miss, but if not your head is clearer to tackle the troubleshooting / costs to get this running. You might want this sent to the hardware forum just as a cross check against the hardware.

And I tried to step away from it, take a walk, come back, and on the upside, I managed to successfully flash the 1018 beta 002 BIOS, but now being bit with where it'll now refuse to even attempt to boot, giving me some kind of error about 'USB over current detected!'
And just shuts down. WHAT THE HELL!?! Tried to flash back to 1017 (the earliest I can go to to still use the Opteron), and again getting the same error. It now won't even let me finish booting because it's throwing up this error. But all I have connected, all this time, was a damn cheapo keyboard and my old trackball. Tried both a VL iteration of XP with service pack 3 and from a retail of XP with service pack 3.
Same difference there. However, i have a bigger problem with those. I don't know how, but managed to find an ide hard drive big enough to install to.
With either disc it would take a few attempts to copy data over to actually start the install process. However, i can't proceed, because neither disc will accept my known legitimate keys. So, try windows 7 again.
And again, problems. Because even with burning the iso to a fresh disc on my main PC, this dumb computer keeps failing to copy correctly and keeps aborting the install. But that was before it decided it won't finish post at all because it's throwing up an error saying that USB is drawing too much power and forces a shutdown. Which makes no damn sense, because the only USB things on that system presently, are the keyboard and trackball. Possibly a weak power supply that can't push enough power to the USB modules and thus drops the voltage (which triggers the error) or perhaps a problematic USB-interface chip.
I'm not sure how far down the road you want to go with such a questionable system. I don't have a whole lot of options right now.
For the repair duties mentioned, i need native ide, which nothing recent has. The via sata controller is preferable concerning 360 dvd drives, but i can also do that with a pci controller card I've had for a long time. And when rebuilding my old main, i discovered some bulging caps on that board, too. Still works, but already dreading what to do. Granted, i did buy the board in my previously main PC back when evga still offered lifetime warranty, but even if they do honor it, it will mean mandatory downtime, and it's much more likely I'll get a replacement that will require basically a whole new build.

One of the potential problems regarding your original system for this thread is that, unless you replaced all the electrolytic caps on the motherboard, even perfectly-good-looking old ones can still be resistively leaky internally. That can cause excessive power-supply loading and pull down output voltages into marginal zones. Unless you replaced all the electrolytics on the mobo, you could still have a sprinkling of hidden cap problems haunting you. Also worthy of note, even nonelectrolytic caps can develop resistive leakage due to aging/over-voltage effects on their insulating layers, though this is not nearly as common as electrolytics going bad.
I've personally observed leakage failures in electrolytic, ceramic, plastic, and mica capacitors. I found this on the web. It rang a bell. I'm sure this is what I did to fix the problem. Set Graphics Aperture size to 256. Also the OP on this page was using BIOS 1017 and W7 32 bit.

Surprise surprise, it actually does work. Still has me scratching my head, because I still don't understand how aperture size has anything to do with whether the BIOS would actually let me have 4GB of RAM installed. First boot with UBCD into memtest, and full pass, again. Found another IDE hard drive as well, so now a 40GB WD and a 80GB WD.
These also just solidify my frustration with the brand, as the 40 seems to randomly disappear, and the 80gb drive shows up but then the BIOS complains that it doesn't exist, while showing all the drives accounted for. SO, UBCD works. But now it's like it's just ignoring the burned DVD for installing Windows 7. Two separate discs and it just gives that stupid blinking cursor, like it's just mocking me. About to try a third burned copy, fresh from the DigitalRiver source for an ISO of 7 w/ SP1. When can I get a damn break?
